How to Prepare Your Home for a Professional Cleaning Service

Ladybug Cleaning Co.January 5, 2022

A few simple steps before your cleaners arrive can make the appointment smoother and help the team spend more time actually cleaning.

Professional cleaners can do their best work when they can quickly reach the surfaces and rooms you want cleaned. You do not need to clean before the cleaners arrive. A little preparation, however, can reduce delays and help your appointment stay focused on cleaning rather than sorting belongings or looking for access instructions.

If this is your first appointment, review the scope of your selected service before the visit. Ladybug offers standard cleaning, deep cleaning, and move-in/out cleaning, and each is designed for a different situation.

Quick pre-cleaning checklist

Before your appointment:

  • Put away loose clutter from floors, counters, and furniture.
  • Wash or move dishes so the kitchen sink and counters are accessible.
  • Secure pets in a comfortable room, crate, yard, or other safe area.
  • Clear bathroom countertops if you want the full surface cleaned.
  • Leave fresh linens on the bed if your selected service includes bed making or linen changes.
  • Share gate codes, parking instructions, alarm details, or other access information in advance.
  • Tell the team about fragile items, special surfaces, or areas that need extra attention.

1. Pick up clutter, but do not pre-clean

There is a difference between preparing and cleaning before the cleaner. You do not need to vacuum, scrub bathrooms, or wipe down the kitchen first. Those are the jobs you hired a cleaning service to handle.

What helps is removing loose items that cover the surfaces you want cleaned. Shoes, toys, paperwork, laundry, mail, and countertop clutter can slow the process because cleaners should not guess where personal belongings belong.

If you only have a few minutes, focus on floors, kitchen counters, bathroom vanities, and high-use furniture surfaces.

2. Make the kitchen easy to access

A crowded sink or countertop can limit how thoroughly those areas can be cleaned. If possible, load the dishwasher or put clean dishes away before the appointment.

You do not need to empty cabinets or appliances unless your selected service specifically includes interior cleaning. For a detailed breakdown of what different service levels are designed to cover, read deep cleaning vs. standard cleaning.

3. Secure pets and share any pet-related notes

Pets are part of the family, but unfamiliar people, vacuums, open doors, and cleaning equipment can be stressful for some animals. A secure space keeps your pet comfortable and helps the team move safely through the home.

If your pet is friendly and will remain loose, tell the cleaning company in advance. Also mention any doors or gates that must stay closed.

4. Clear bathroom vanities

Bathroom counters collect toothbrushes, cosmetics, medication, hair tools, and other personal items. Moving those items into a drawer, basket, or temporary container gives cleaners access to the entire countertop and backsplash.

This is especially helpful in Las Vegas homes where mineral residue can build up around faucets and sink edges.

5. Confirm access before the appointment

If you will not be home, make sure the team knows how to enter. That may mean a lockbox, keypad code, gate code, concierge instruction, or another agreed-upon method.

For first-time appointments, it can also help to leave a short note about priorities. Keep it focused: two or three important items are usually more useful than a long wish list that goes beyond the booked service.

What not to worry about

You do not need a picture-perfect house before the team arrives. Normal day-to-day mess is expected. The goal is simply to remove avoidable obstacles so the cleaning team can spend the appointment on the tasks you are paying them to complete.

If your home has significant buildup, has not been professionally cleaned recently, or needs more detailed attention than routine maintenance, a deep cleaning may be a better starting point than a standard visit.
